June 2009 A Note from Pastor Joyce Smothers: Dear Friends in Christ, It has been fun, getting to know you since the first of May. I am having a wonderful time at your church. Please keep those sermon evaluations coming! I will continue my morning office hours from Tuesday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., through the month of June. Please call or email me (rev.joyce@hotmail.com) your favorite hymn titles from our hymnal, THE WORSHIPING CHURCH. During the summer, we will sing them. I will call you in advance when your hymn choice will be sung, and your name will appear in the bulletin that week.(e.g. “requested by John and Jane Doe”). Summer worship begins on Father’s Day, June 21. We will begin worshiping on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. until September 13, when we will resume the ten o’clock worship time on Sundays. Vacation Bible School is scheduled for July 13 through 17 from five thirty to eight thirty p.m. at our church. The theme for this year is DISCOVERY CANYON. We welcome children from pre-school through sixth grade. Please see or call Debbie Snyder if you would like to enroll your child, or you want to volunteer to teach. She can fill you in on minimum ages and activities and so on. I plan to teach a week-long Bible study series on the book of Jonah, for adults, each evening during the week of Vacation Bible School. This will be “BIBLE STUDY LIGHT” —no Hebrew translation or exegesis, no scholarly articles to read. We will informally discuss the satirical and humorous story of Jonah and relate it to its historical period. We will also tie in some contemporary concerns, including prejudice, anger, forgiveness, indirect communication, and even problems in parenting. We will meet in my office. Please let me know if you would like to join us for one or more meetings. The series will based on the Presbyterian Horizons Bible Study Unit, “Above and Beyond.” See you on Sunday! Vacation Bible School Discovery Canyon VBS program will be held the week of July 13th - 17th from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m. (Preschool through 6th grade) We're looking for volunteers, please see Deb Snyder. See the bulletin board for sign-up info. Summer Worship Schedule June 21 until September 13 Worship time 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Basket Bingo Proceeds The choir would like to extend a great big THANK YOU to everyone in the congregation for all the support in making this years’ Basket Bingo a great success. We couldn’t do this without everyone’s help and support. After all the money was counted and the accounting paperwork processed, we found that an error was made and the profit realized from the bingo is actually $5435.00. This will all be donated to the Building Fund. Thank you again for your support. We look forward to the next one. A Friendly Reminder Please remember to make sure all doors are locked and all lights are turned out when leaving the Church. Thanks! Food Collection Session and Sunday School will be collecting non-perishable food items to go to our local food bank. Please place any donations in the boxes in the mail hallway and in the sanctuary. Thank you. Giving Envelopes The 2009 Giving Envelopes are ready. Please stop by the table in Fellowship Hall to pick up your envelopes. Thank you!
