March 18, 2010 meeting

The Session met on Thursday, March 18, 2010 with eleven members present. It was moderated by the Revrend Joyce W. Smothers. The meeting opened with devotions from Joshua 1: 9-11.


CLERK’S REPORT:

May 15 – Reading of Session Minutes-Allentown, First.

The Financial records were audited as of March 16th.

Clerk of Session received and reviewed the Board of Deacons’ minutes of February 21st.


CORRESPONDENCE:

Lehigh Presbytery prayer requests:
Chip Andrus, David Hinds, Ray White – Rev. Steve Shussett’s father-in-law; Jill Harris; Lynn Lenier & wife Lisa; Patty Colson – wife of Rev. Charles Colson; Evelyn Schaffer & daughter Vicki from Bethlehem 1st; March Prayer requests for churches: Milford, Mahanoy City, Reading Pennside, and Weatherly.

April 28-29 Presbyterian Writers Guild Annual Conference.

Board of Pensions updates.


PASTOR’S REPORT:

Distributed a written report of her activities from February 21 – March 18, 2010 which included:

  • March 15 – Officiated for the funeral of Allen E. Kern.
  • Led worship service at Westminster Village on February 21st.
  • Attended CHES Meeting on March 2nd.
  • Visited and served communion to shut-ins, hospital patients and those recovering at home.
  • Is teaching a Bible study on Genesis.
  • The One Great Hour of Sharing Offering was taken on March 28.
  • Attended Presbytery Committee on Ministry meeting on March 16th.
  • Attended Presbytery Retreat for New Pastors March 9-10.
  • Met with Kevin Justice and Megan Hilbert on March 17th regarding a baptism for Kevin and request for membership for both Kevin and Megan.
  • Hosted a planning meeting for the Easter Vigil.
  • Rev. Stephen Emick is serving as our Liaison to C.O.M. Committee of Lehigh Presbytery and will attend the May Session Meeting.
  • Met with a group interested in forming an Evangelism Committee.
  • Met with Girl Scout Troop #611.
  • Received a request for a memorial service celebrating the life of Ellwood R.H.
    Quigg on March 27th.
  • Requested the reinstatement of the “Hands of Fellowship” and “New Members” Ministry Committees.

MINUTES of February 21, 2010 were approved with corrections.


FINANCIAL REPORT:

Received Yr. to Date Balance Sheet, Financial Report, YTD Budget vs. Actual, Profit and Loss, Budget vs. Actual Reports for February 2010. Reports were reviewed and filed for Audit.


MINISTRY REPORTS:

Worship and Music -

May 23 – Confirmation Sunday/Pentecost Offering will be received.

Christian Education -

Parents’ commitment and support are needed to bring children to Sunday School in order to fulfill the baptismal vows that were made to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Presbyterian Women -

With the help of the Deacons, Choir, Sunday School and Fellowship Committee, the PW are planning a Patriotic Tea on May 15th at 2:00 P.M.

The Mission Project is to fill baby kits.

Deacons -

Met on February 21st; decorated the Sanctuary for Easter.

Nursery School -

The school year will end May 14th for our nursery school, according to Director April Hantz.


COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Communication -

There are some anniversary books still for sale at $28 per copy. See Pastor Joyce or Kathy Jernegan.

Fellowship and Group Life -

There will be a Sunday Morning Breakfast. Details will follow.

Personnel -

Reviews of staff job descriptions have been completed.

Nominating -

Search your hearts and volunteer to serve as a Deacon. We need to fill two vacancies for the Class of 2012.

Property -

A new Ricoh copy machine has arrived from Edward’s Business Machines.

The canopy over the door at the back of the church needs repairs. Quotes are needed for the replacement of the roof on the Sunday School wing.

The Williams room has been reorganized, giving space for preparation of Holy Communion.

Stained glass windows are in need of repair.

Heating system problems have been taken care of.

Fire extinguishers need to be replaced.

The tree near the garage needs to be removed.

It was suggested that the grassy area behind the church be turned into a resurfaced parking lot.

The church bell has been rung for special worship services.

Gifts of the Heart -

May 23rd Pentecost Offering

Old Business -

Session Committees need to increase their membership; a congregational “Time and Talent” survey is being drafted for Session approval.

New Business -

It was suggested that once again we have an all-member visitation.

No further business the meeting was adjourned with a unison prayer led by Pastor Joyce at 8:35 P.M.
